The latest NHS Innovation Accelerator cohort reflects where energy is building around service change, practical scaling, and new approaches to long-standing care challenges.

NHS Innovation Accelerator Welcomes 2025 Fellows: Powering the Future of Healthcare

In a fresh wave of forward-thinking ambition, the NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) has officially welcomed its 2025 cohort of Fellows—a group of outstanding health entrepreneurs, clinicians, and digital pioneers selected for their proven ability to bring disruptive, scalable innovation into real-world healthcare settings.

With a renewed focus on digital transformation, preventative medicine, and home-based care, this year’s intake reflects the NHS’s growing commitment to modernising services, empowering patients, and tackling systemic challenges with agile, evidence-backed solutions.

What Is the NHS Innovation Accelerator?

Launched in 2015, the NIA is a joint initiative delivered by the Accelerated Access Collaborative, NHS England, and Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs). Its aim is to fast-track the adoption of high-impact healthcare innovations across the NHS, ensuring that promising technologies, tools, and models of care reach patients and staff as efficiently as possible.

Each year, a small number of handpicked Fellows join the programme to receive bespoke support, national mentorship, strategic guidance, and access to key NHS decision-makers. In turn, they commit to testing and scaling their innovations in live healthcare settings.

To date, the programme has supported over 70 innovations, benefiting more than 3 million patients and saving the NHS an estimated £50 million.

Meet the 2025 Cohort

The newest Fellows bring with them a bold vision for the future of health and care. Their innovations span a wide spectrum of challenges—from chronic disease management and mental health to workforce optimisation and data integration. Key themes include:

  • Digital-first care models for remote monitoring and virtual consultations
  • Predictive analytics to identify high-risk patients and intervene early
  • AI-powered triage tools to support urgent and emergency care
  • Home-based diagnostics and treatments, reducing hospital admissions
  • Personalised preventive care using real-time patient data

Each innovation has already demonstrated clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness, making them strong candidates for rapid NHS-wide adoption.

“We’re excited to support these Fellows in navigating the complexities of NHS procurement, integration, and evaluation,” said Dr. Mahiben Maruthappu, founder of the NIA. “Their work is essential to building a resilient, future-ready health system.”

Driving System-Wide Transformation

The NIA doesn’t just back technology—it fosters a culture of innovation, equipping NHS leaders and frontline staff with the tools to champion change within their organisations. Fellows are matched with AHSNs to help adapt their innovations to local needs, ensuring a balance between national vision and regional relevance.

In previous years, NIA innovations have transformed services in areas such as:

  • Stroke rehabilitation
  • Remote COPD monitoring
  • Digital consent and documentation
  • Early cancer detection
  • Reducing medication errors

This year’s cohort is expected to build on that legacy, with a particular emphasis on supporting NHS Long Term Plan goals, including reducing health inequalities and increasing care closer to home.

Why It Matters Now

As the NHS faces unprecedented challenges—from elective backlogs to staff burnout and rising demand—there has never been a greater need for efficient, intelligent, and sustainable innovation. The NIA provides a structured, supported pathway for great ideas to thrive—not just in theory, but in practice.

By enabling entrepreneurs and clinicians to scale what works, the NHS Innovation Accelerator is helping to reshape the future of healthcare—one solution, one patient, and one trust at a time.

The 2025 Fellows are more than just innovators—they are changemakers. As they begin their journey to bring bold ideas to the NHS frontline, they carry with them the potential to improve outcomes, reduce pressure on services, and inspire a new era of healthcare transformation.
