The current consultation opens a wider discussion about what long-term NHS reform should prioritise, from access and prevention to service design and workforce resilience.

Government Launches Public Consultation on 10-Year Health Plan

The Government has launched a public consultation inviting NHS staff, experts, and the public to contribute their ideas for improving the NHS. The responses will shape the 10-Year Health Plan, set to be released in spring 2025. This ambitious plan will focus on three key shifts in healthcare: transitioning from hospital to community care, moving from analogue to digital systems, and prioritising prevention over sickness.

Speaking about the initiative, Health and Social Care Secretary Wes Streeting stated: “Investment alone won’t be enough to solve the issues facing the NHS, which is why it must go hand in hand with fundamental reform. It is vital the Government hears from patients, experts, and NHS staff to ensure we preserve the things people value most about the service.”

The consultation will be conducted via an online platform, change.nhs.uk, allowing individuals to share their views and help shape the future of the NHS.

NHS Leaders Weigh In

Amanda Pritchard, Chief Executive of NHS England, highlighted the importance of the plan, saying: “The 10-Year Health Plan is an opportunity to make best practices standard across the country. We’ll be carrying out the largest staff engagement exercise in NHS history, leaving no stone unturned as we gather input from frontline staff, patients, and the public to ensure this happens.”

Saffron Cordery, Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Providers, called the 10-Year Health Plan a “landmark moment for the NHS”, noting that trust leaders are prepared to work with the Government to address the many challenges the health service faces and to create a “next-generation NHS fit for the future.”

Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive of the NHS Confederation, agreed that the NHS is at a “turning point” and that the 10-Year Plan will set the service on a path towards sustainability, ensuring it can serve the population effectively in the years to come.

Addressing the Social Care Crisis

Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, stressed that the NHS’s major challenges cannot be addressed without resolving the crisis in social care. He added: “That’s why the Liberal Democrats will ensure that social care is part of the debate and push for a cross-party solution to this crisis.”

This consultation marks a significant step in the Government’s effort to shape the future of healthcare in the UK, ensuring the NHS evolves to meet the growing demands of the population while maintaining high standards of care.
